The design brief of ‘Canal House’ was aimed at creating a crisp, clean and contemporary beach house. Natural materials were used within simple geometric forms which combine in a minimalistic composition. The simple geometric elements employ hidden structural techniques to create forms that float, engendering a sense of weightlessness. This results in a home that feels light, airy and calm to its inhabitants. This property includes private water access and boat mooring and hence creating a strong connection to the water was seen as an important goal. This was achieved through careful detailing and use of materials which create a seamless inside/outside connection.

Double multi-stacking doors slide away to open up an entire corner of the living space. This in conjunction with frameless glass balustrades, recessed sills and consistent floor textures completes the indoor/outdoor connection.

Environmentally, the house is strongly orientated to the north with solar shading achieved by the careful placement of inherent forms of the architecture. As well as home entertainment, C4 home automation controls blinds, AC, ceiling fans and lighting. These can be programmed or controlled remotely to respond to weather conditions and optimise energy efficiency.

A large central stairwell draws air through the core of the house via the “stack effect”. This is enhanced through extensive use of louvred windows and strategically placed ceiling fans.

The interior design utilises a coastal palette of Vic Ash floorboards and stone tiling. Matching veneer cabinetry ensures a cohesiveness throughout the home, which results in simplicity and again a sense of calmness for the occupant’s at this permanent beachside retreat.
